Ridding Your Home of Lice
Head lice can live away from their human host for up to 48 hours. It is not uncommon for reinfestations to occur because live lice are still present in the living environment. To rid your home of lice and prevent a reinfestation, do the following:
- Wash bedding, pillows, clothing, everything the infested person came into contact with in hot water followed by drying on the highest temperature setting.
- For items that are not machine washable such as stuffed toys, pillows, and comforters, place them in a tightly sealed plastic bag and isolate for two weeks. Two weeks allows time for complete lice elimination before reintroducing items back into the environment.
- Vacuum carpets, mattresses, furniture, and car seats. We do not recommend the use of bedding sprays because these contain pesticides.
Submerse hair care items – combs, brushes, barrettes, hair bands, etc. – in water that has boiled or put them in a sealed plastic bag and place it in the freezer for 48 hours. Some people prefer to throw away these articles. - You can isolate any room of your house for 48-72 hours to ensure that all lice in that room have been eliminated.
In addition, every person in the household should use NitFree Mint Spray to avoid reinfestation. Mint Spray has been formulated with natural products that lice find offensive and actually repels them. Lightly mist NitFree Mint Spray on the hair, with special attention given to the nape of the neck and behind the ears. Mint Spray may be used once per day or several times per day.
